Is curfew a sign of early arrival of Monsoon?

Since, the imposition of weekend curfew in New Delhi, the weather has changed its appearance. From Saturday, capital witnessed dust storms resultant, falling of trees and traffic jams. Apart from that, light showers also called as drizzle (having diameter of 0.2-0.5mm) or maybe less than that, also took place.

The cloudy weather brought the mercury down slightly, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The wind speed was 50 km per hour particularly, in South-West Delhi.

In the last year 2020 also, when we were all under lockdown, improved side of the nature came into existence. Which further proves that human has more likely to do with the nature and its retaliation.

As per the Report of 2020, given by Statista Research Department, the registered motor vehicles (cars, vans, trucks, motorbike) in Delhi were 11.89 millions, obviously, the numbers must have gone up in 2021.

Coming back to the topic, with the imposition of 1 week total curfew from Monday to next upcoming Monday, intensity of heat has gone down. On Tuesday April 20,2021 the heat intensity was low since morning. The maximum temperature was 28 degree Celsius while the minimum was 20 degree Celsius.

According to CPCB (Central Pollution Control Board) a statutory body under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, the AQI (Air Quality Index) was moderate with the value of 191. But, this occurrence is not due to monsoon.

The reason behind is the western disturbances which is expected to cause widespread rainfall or snowfall over the Western Himalayan Region, and isolated to scattered rainfall over plains of northwest India between April 20 and 22.

The concept of western disturbances:

    • It is a complex weather phenomena, which originally applies on winter months rainfall, but as the definition says complex we cannot claim the same.
    • A low pressure system which originates over the Mediterranean sea travelling over Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and finally arrives in India with moisture
    • The regions  it covers in India are basically, North and North-west regions
    • In Climatology, pressure and temperature works vice versa. meaning when there is a Low pressure, means High temperature. And High Pressure means Low temperature.
    • Always keep in mind that, air always moves from High pressure to Low pressure.
    • So, there must be some pressure exchange taking place in relation with Mediterranean sea and Himalayas.
Concluding the part, the nature of the weather from past five days has improved in terms of heat, cloudiness, wind and storm. But we cannot say that, these are signs of early arrival of monsoon for sure. As everything on Earth works in a systematic manner though humans have disturbed this management long ago, but still we cannot predict until possible signs would came into existence.

  1. Nice observations. But the Monsoon doesn't have any association with the local or regional phenomenon. We all know that it is related to several global phenomenon such as ElNino, differential heating if sea and land surfces etc

    1. I agree with your point Shahfahad, but as i mentioned already that the rainfall or any dust storms occurred due to exchange in pressure which exactly explains your point of differential heating of land and sea. As far as El-Nino is concerned, this year there is no El-Nino year. Because if that would have been the case then even after curfew or lockdown there wouldn't any drizzling effect. I hope that explains your point.

  2. Point is good but weekend curfew or lockdown causes weather phenomenon not the climate phenomenon and also monsoon breakthrough is studied at the global rather than at regional level. Even this isn't able to explain mechanism of Monsoon.

    1. Definitely, I did not talk about any climate phenomenon here, I took rain and storms as a component to explain such questions which often hits the mind of the people. As you must be aware that there are curfew, Section 144 and lockdown took place in many regions or states of India, so I tried to explain that relation with early arrival of monsoon and why that early arrival is not possible. I hope that is clear.

  5. Very well explained and described about the weather phenomenon. In my opinion, as we can infer from the past data which have revealed that Mother Nature has been healed during the lockdown as nature has always been the the giver and we as humans being the taker. Now it’s time for us to return the favour and let Mother Nature heals at her own way.
